A brief history of the Senegal National team

Senegal’s soccer team began after independence in 1960 and slowly grew through early AFCON appearances before rising strongly in the 1990s. The team made global headlines in 2002 by reaching the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals in their first appearance. The team also finished as Africa Cup of Nations runners-up that same year. Since then, the squad has become one of Africa’s most consistent teams, reaching AFCON finals in 2019 and 2021 before winning their first title in 2022. Despite economic challenges, Senegal remains a major force in African and world football.
